Staying involved
or stepping back

In this section of the pathway, we look at once you are involved in research. Some projects will come to an end and naturally your involvement in it will finish then. We do not cover that scenario here. Instead we share some guidance to help make your experience of staying involved or stepping back from research positive.

For some projects you may need to step back before it is over. This could be for a range of reasons, including:

  • Your health, memory, concentration or ability to focus gets worse.

  • People around you (e.g. a carer, doctor) say they've noticed changes in your health, memory, concentration or ability to focus.

  • You or the person you care for has to go to hospital.

  • You feel unable to go to meetings, read documents, take part in discussions or do other tasks that are required.

  • You feel the researchers you are working are not listening to your feedback about the project or project team.

  • The project you are working on goes in a different direction to what you agreed to work on.

If this happens, you are always welcome to step away from the project.

Below are some things for you to think about, whether you wish to stay involved or step back.
